Tilda Swinton calls Doctor Strange’s backlash “ hot, sticky and frustrating. ”
These days, filmmakers must reject the fearsome rope: representation is at the fore, and decisions need to be made about whether to hire the best actor for the role or balance equality. So when the Marvel character from The Ancient One, a Tibetan from the comics, was introduced to Doctor Strange, there were immediate complaints about “cleanliness” against Kevin Feige and his company for hiring Tilda Swinton to play the role.
Controversial opinions ranged from those who got angry at Marvel Studios for using a white actor, to those who praised the use of a woman in such an authoritative role in the narrative, to those who knew nothing about comics and had no idea they were anything. except for the dominant performance on the show.
Kevin Feige has since talked about how regretful he was about the decision to take part in the filming. Tilda Swinton in the role, and recently the actress herself spoke of her feelings, including praising Feige for his recognition and regret over the choices made regarding the character’s on-screen appearance. In an interview with Variety, Swinton called the whole situation “hot, unpleasant and unpleasant moment.”
She told the magazine: “I remember that at that time there was a question mark in my head and I participated in the public response to the idea that a Scottish woman would play this character, and realizing that there was no resistance at all – there was a general reception, which at some point changed for a very good reason, for which I had great sympathy. ”
Kevin Feige addressed controversy surrounding the character while speaking to Men’s health magazine in promotion Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a movie you like Black Panther before that sees Marvel Cinematic Universe encompassing a large ethnic composition.
“We thought we were acting so smart and so advanced,” Feige said. “We are not going to repeat the cliché of a wise old Asian man. But it was a wake-up call to say, “Wait a minute, is there any other way to find out? Is there any other way to find out? “Both fall out of the cliché and chose an Asian actor?” and the answer is, of course, yes. ”
The difficult situation in film and television is currently controversial and could lead to a halt in production. Studios and directors are trying to please everyone by reimagining previously white characters with black or Asian actors, and predominantly male roles are shifting to female actors, it doesn’t go well with some. Likewise, the failure to select ethnic minorities in roles in which the character was created as a minority character causes them a flood of complaints. This is a wonderful trail to walk on, and I don’t think many will readily take it.
As for Swinton, her role in the Marvel Universe as the Ancient One will likely still be fulfilled, unless she has a slight unknown appearance in any of the upcoming What if? series or Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness, which hits theaters on March 25 next year.
