How to paint with a compressed air spray gun

Using a compressor and airless paint sprayer to paint can save a lot of time and money, and avoid contamination caused by aerosol can bow thrusters. To paint with a compressed air spray, follow the directions.

Method 1

Before you start

1. Choose mascara and color of your choice.

We recommend using oil based enamels as they are easiest to use with a compressed air spray. For spraying, you can also use acrylic and latex paints. Adding a suitable solvent will allow the most viscous ink to flow freely through the suction tube and spray nozzle. Before doing this, you should always choose the best airless paint sprayer.

2. Prepare the area where you will paint.

Place a cloth, trash bag, newspaper, or other material on the floor and furniture so they are not stained or splashed with paint. For “still” paintings like the one shown here, you need to protect the surrounding surfaces and ventilate the room.
Protect surfaces closest to spray with masking tape and newspaper (for example). An unsuspecting wind can send ink particles to unexpected places.
Select paint and thinner according to the surface to be painted for good adhesion. So there will be no spills.

3. Use a mask, goggles and gloves to apply paint.

They will keep you clean and protect you from harmful gases, airless spray and particles.

4. Prepare the surface for painting.

Clean, scrub or sand the application area, removing all dirt to keep the surface smooth. Let the area dry before applying paint. For the application of oil paints, it is recommended to clean the surface. For latex or acrylic paints, use soap and water yourself. Rinse liberally. Always pay attention to airless paint sprayer reviews.

5. Apply the first coat of paint (optional).

You can use a spray gun to apply the primer of your choice (following the instructions below as if it were painting) or you can simply replace the primer with a primer: if you like, you can use a brush or roller. When you’re done, you can sand down the areas you want.

Method 2

1. Turn on the air compressor.

Use some air to test your bomb. Let him create pressure as you start painting. The compressor must have a regulator to set the correct air pressure for the sprayer, otherwise air flow fluctuations may occur.

2. Set the compressor between 12 and 25 psi.

The exact amount depends on your sprayer: if in doubt, refer to the machine’s manual (or the equipment itself) for more information.

3. Insert the air hose into the gun coupling.

Fit well so that the hose remains stationary. If necessary, use thread sealing tape to better secure the nozzle. This does not apply if the sprayer and hose are equipped with quick couplings.

4. Pour a small amount of paint thinner into the reservoir.

Attached to the bottom of the spray gun is a reservoir: enough solvent should be drained here to submerge a small siphon from the inside of the cup.

5. Open sprayer air valve.

This is usually the lowest handle above the spray handle.

6. Clean sprayer with solvent.

Point the nozzle into the bucket and pull the trigger. It usually takes a few seconds for the system to release the liquid from the glass. So at first glance, only air will come out of the nozzle. After a while, you will see the solvent start to come out. If it doesn’t come out, disassemble the equipment and look for anything blocking the fluid flow.

7. Empty sprayer to remove solvent residues.

Using the funnel as a tool, you can return the jar to its original container. Turpentine and turpentine (two common thinners) are two flammable solvents and should only be stored in their original packaging.


Method 3

Spray painting of selected surface

1. Mix enough paint for your project.

Stir well after opening a can of paint. Then pour enough for your project into a separate, clean container. If the paint has been stored in your home for a long time, it is recommended to strain the paint through a special filter to remove any lumps that have formed. These lumps can clog the spray siphon or metering valve, disrupting ink flow.

2. Add a suitable solvent to the paint.

The exact proportion of thinner will depend on your ink and spray bottle. However, it is recommended to thin the paint about 15–20% for good flow. Therefore, add thinner or thinner slightly less than a quarter of the size of the paint you are using. Notice how thin the paint will become when you turn on the spray. Thereafter, the amount of solvent will be the most appropriate to achieve the desired effect.

3. Fill reservoir slightly more than half full of paint and then insert into spray gun.

Install the reservoir correctly, otherwise it may fall suddenly during use.

4. Hold the sprayer 5-10 cm from the surface.

Practice the ideal spray that is applied side-to-side or top-down in wide strokes parallel to the surface to be painted. If you’ve never used this type of paint applicator before, practice the process to gain a sense of balance and weight.

5. Pull the trigger to spray paint.

Keep the sprayer moving whenever you pull the trigger. This will prevent splashing and overflow.
It is best to test your craft on wood or cardboard in front of a wall. Adjust the nozzle if necessary to achieve a smoother, more even spray.

6. Lightly overlap each layer of paint applied.

By using this spray pattern, there will be no translucent stains left on your paint. Watch out for spills and excess: move the applicator fast enough to keep the paint even.

7. Fill the reservoir as needed until it is full.

Do not leave paint inside the sprayer to preserve the instrument. If you want a break, remove the reservoir and spray some solvent through the system before leaving it unused (see Step 6 Prepare the Compressor).

8. Wait for the paint to dry and apply another coat if basic.

A well-cured coating is more than sufficient for most paints. However, a second coat can provide a stronger and more uniform finish. Lightly sanding the surface between coats is highly recommended when using varnishes, polyurethane coatings and other glossy topcoats or sealants between coats.

Method 4

Cleaning the environment

1. Pour the remaining paint back into the jar.

If you have a significant amount of ink left, you can return it to the jar. However, remember that the returned ink has been thinned with solvent. The next time you use it, remember that you have already added a solvent to the product (indirectly).
Epoxy and catalyst based inks are non-returnable; instead, they should be used up completely or disposed of properly after mixing.

2. Flush the reservoir with a solvent.

Wipe off excess ink.

3. Fill reservoir with solvent, shake slightly, and spray through gun until jet comes out clean.

If there is still too much ink remaining in the system, you may need to repeat this step more than once.

4. Remove all tape and paper from the build plate.

Do this as soon as the paint is dry. If the tape is left on the surface for a long time, it can be difficult to remove.


• Color horizontally or vertically. Do not try to use both methods in the same project, as the end result may not work (the viewing angles of the painting will not be uniform).
• Read the instructions or operator’s manual for your sprayer. You should be familiar with the volume, viscosity and type of ink your equipment supports. The photos in this article can help with this process: keep in mind that the first valve regulates the air volume and the bottom valve regulates the ink flow. The nozzle has an adjustable ring, which, during operation, changes the shape of the nozzle (to vertical or horizontal).
• Always clean sprayer after use. For oil based paints, you can use acetone or lacquer thinner.
• Using a compressed air sprayer instead of aerosol cans allows for custom color painting, reduces air pollution and saves money. Unfortunately, however, this is not a completely sustainable alternative, as solvents also give off vapors that are harmful to the environment;
• Mix, if possible, enough paint for the entire paint. Remember that each mixture gives a slightly different color.
• Use a catalyst for automotive paintwork. This product is specially formulated to speed up drying time without affecting finish, color or paintwork.
• Use hot water as a solvent for water-based paints (at a temperature of about 50 degrees C). In this way, you only need a 5% solution (this means that you must set a solvent dose equivalent to 5% of the used paint measure);
